Italian football federation pulls backing for Infantino ahead of 2027 FIFA vote

The Italian football federation (FIGC) declared on Wednesday that it will withdraw its endorsement of FIFA president Gianni Infantino for the upcoming election scheduled for March 2027. This decision comes after Infantino faced intense scrutiny for unveiling a billions-dollar scheme to sell World Cup broadcasting rights to private investors, a proposal that was rescinded following widespread protests, including a boycott threat from UEFA.

While UEFA is reportedly dropping its boycott threat, it continues to discuss further actions against Infantino over the failed sell-off plan. FIGC chief Giovanni Malagò emphasized that Italy will continue collaborating with UEFA and other European federations to advance a football model rooted in merit, solidarity, sustainability, and fan interests.
