Italian hospital doctors' resignations surge 150% in 2025, outpacing retirements

The doctors' union Anaao Assomed reported that 3,767 hospital physicians left their jobs in 2025, a 150% rise from the previous year and higher than the number of retirements.

Anaao Assomed said 3,767 doctors quit Italian public hospitals in 2025, compared with 1,503 resignations in 2024. The departures exceeded retirements, which totaled 2,876 that year. The quitters represent 3.5% of all public-sector doctors, a share never reached even during the COVID-19 peak. Union secretary Pierino Di Silverio blamed grueling shifts, low salaries, burnout-prone conditions, heavy bureaucracy and workplace violence.

Why it matters

A sharp rise in doctor resignations threatens Italy's public health capacity and patient care quality.
