Italian Prime Minister Meloni registers voice snippet to block AI-generated audio fakes
Giorgia Meloni has filed a four-second recording of her voice with the EU Intellectual Property Office to prevent AI-crafted deepfake audio. The request now awaits formal assessment.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sought to safeguard her spoken identity by registering a brief, four-second audio clip with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The recorded phrase, “Io sono Giorgia Meloni,” is intended to serve as a trademarked vocal signature that could be used to identify and block AI-generated impersonations. Meloni has previously warned that deepfake media can mislead and manipulate the public, citing earlier fake photographs and a lawsuit filed in 2024 against a Sardinian individual alleged to have created pornographic deepfakes of her.
The registration request now enters a review phase, during which the EUIPO will decide whether to grant the protection. If approved, the measure could set a precedent for political figures confronting synthetic media threats. Critics note that the effectiveness of such registrations remains uncertain, but the initiative underscores growing concerns over AI-driven misinformation.
