Italian researchers deploy 130,000 baby octopuses to curb blue crab spread in the Mediterranean

Scientists in Italy have released roughly 130,000 newly hatched common octopus larvae into the Adriatic Sea to combat the growing invasion of blue crabs.

In an effort to protect Mediterranean marine ecosystems, Italian scientists have introduced around 130,000 common octopus paralarvae into the northern Adriatic, targeting the surge of blue crabs that have disrupted local biodiversity and fishing livelihoods. The Octo-Blu project, launched in 2024, combines laboratory rearing techniques with field releases near Cesenatico and Riccione, accompanied by artificial dens for the tiny cephalopods.

Antonio Casalini of the University of Bologna emphasizes that the strategy strengthens an existing native species rather than adding a new one. Marine ecologist Gianluca Sarà notes the high natural mortality of octopus larvae, suggesting the long-term impact may be modest. Nonetheless, a full-grown octopus can consume up to four medium crabs per day, offering a biological control tool alongside existing fisheries management measures. The team plans to continue breeding and releasing more larvae as the program progresses.
