Italian traveler detained at Turin airport for carrying protected crocodile head
A passenger arriving from the United States was stopped at Turin's Caselle airport after officials found a dried crocodile head in his luggage, violating wildlife trade rules.
At Turin's Caselle airport, a passenger returning from the United States was caught with a dried crocodile head concealed in regular packing paper. The head belongs to a species listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which prohibits commercial trade of such wildlife. Guardia di Finanza and the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli conducted a thorough baggage inspection and seized the specimen.
The traveler was formally denounced for importing a protected animal without the necessary Italian authorization. Officials explained that the law, ratified in Italy by law no. 874 of 1975, aims to prevent threats to endangered species. Violators may face fines ranging from twenty thousand to two hundred thousand euros or imprisonment of six months to one year.
