Italy braces for sixth heatwave as temperatures surge up to 8°C above average

Meteorologists predict that an anticyclone will trigger Italy's sixth summer heatwave between September 4 and September 9, with temperatures climbing up to eight degrees Celsius above the usual seasonal average. In Milan, peaks of 34-35 °C could challenge the city’s all-time September record, while Rome may see highs of 35-36 °C, nearing its historic maximum. The forecast notes that daylight is now shorter—about 13 hours in both cities—reducing the cooling effect of solar radiation.

Tedici warns that the real danger lies in the heat retained by the seas, which will act as a reservoir of energy for future weather events. As the week progresses, an Atlantic low-pressure system is expected to clash with the heated Mediterranean, raising the likelihood of intense cloudbursts and early autumn storms across the region.
