Italy extends border checks with Spain, citing security and terrorism risks

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced a 15-day extension of air and sea border controls with Spain, warning of heightened security threats and possible terrorist infiltration.

Italy's interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, issued a note to the European Commission and fellow EU interior ministers confirming a 15-day prolongation of border controls with Spain for both air and maritime routes. The move stems from findings by the Committee for Immigration and Border Security, which highlighted ongoing high security risks and the potential for terrorist infiltration. Consequently, the temporary suspension of the Schengen arrangement with Spain will also be extended by the same period.

The Italian government justified the action as necessary after the committee's morning meeting. Spanish officials indicated they will decide their next steps when appropriate, and the announcement was formally recorded by the Viminale.
