Italy orders 45-day hold and fine for Sea-Watch 5 migrant rescue vessel

The Italian government has ordered a 45-day detention of the Sea-Watch 5, a vessel operated by the German migrant-rescue NGO Sea-Watch, and levied a €7,500 fine for alleged violations of search-and-rescue regulations. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi explained that rescue missions must be coordinated by states, not private NGOs, and cited a recent operation in international waters as the trigger. European Affairs Minister Tommaso Foti added that laws apply uniformly, regardless of disagreement.
Sea-Watch responded that it had maintained radio contact with the Libyan coastguard and accused Italy of obstructing lifesaving efforts. Spokesperson Giulia Messmer rejected the accusations, calling the detention a punitive act against humanitarian work. The incident marks the eighth such action against Sea-Watch in 2026, adding to ongoing tensions over Italy’s migration policy under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
