Jacob Chase Reboots Insidious with Fresh Storytelling and Personal Fears
Writer-director Jacob Chase launches the sixth Insidious film, aiming to revitalize the series with new scares and an emotional core.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has rolled out the sixth chapter of the Insidious franchise, directed by horror specialist Jacob Chase. The plot centers on Gemma, portrayed by Amelia Eve, who discovers a new ability to astral project, unintentionally bringing entities from The Further into reality while confronting inherited trauma. Chase, previously known for the 2020 thriller Come Play, leveraged lessons from his Bigworm Sherwood Scare haunted attraction in Northridge, California, to craft jump scares that advance the narrative rather than exist solely for shock.
He emphasizes that each scare aligns with Gemma’s character arc and his personal fears about becoming a father. Notable set pieces include a claustrophobic pillow-fort sequence inspired by the film The Descent and a dentist-related gag rooted in his own painful dental experience. Following this release, Chase is slated to direct an as-yet-unnamed horror picture for Blumhouse under Universal, signaling continued studio confidence in his approach.
Why it matters
The film marks a strategic reboot of a long-running horror series, showing how personal experience can reshape franchise storytelling.
