Jaishankar urges Global South unity to tackle geopolitical and climate challenges

During a session of Global South countries held alongside the 81st UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar warned that the world faces heightened conflicts, fragmented trade, rising debt vulnerabilities and worsening climate events. He called for tighter economic, technological and environmental collaboration among developing nations to address supply-chain disruptions, energy price manipulation, grain and fertilizer shortages, and to safeguard maritime routes and seafarers.

Jaishankar also highlighted the importance of expanding industrial production and ensuring inclusive governance of artificial intelligence. Emphasising the need for a reformed multilateral system, he urged the use of existing platforms to voice shared concerns. Later, he met Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in New York, where they exchanged views on the Gulf region, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
