Jakarta Falls to Fourth-Worst Global Air Quality Ranking

Jakarta's air quality hit an AQI of 169 on Friday morning, placing the city fourth worldwide for unhealthy air conditions.

Jakarta registered an Air Quality Index of 169 early Friday, situating it as the fourth most polluted city on the world list, according to IQAir data. The unhealthy rating stems from PM2.5 concentrations of 87 micrograms per cubic meter, a level that can affect sensitive groups and damage vegetation. Lahore, Manama and Kolkata rank ahead, while Delhi follows Jakarta.

Officials recommend avoiding outdoor activities, using masks, and sealing windows to reduce exposure. In anticipation of the dry season from May to August, the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to enhance its monitoring network and conduct motor vehicle emission tests. The city is also reviewing its Air Pollution Control Strategy, emphasizing coordinated action across regional agencies and neighboring areas.

Why it matters

Poor air quality poses health risks and highlights the need for stronger pollution controls in Jakarta.
