Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan to launch third nationwide anti-levy sit-in on Friday

Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan announced a third wave of sit-ins across all districts on Friday, demanding the full removal of the petroleum levy.

Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan issued a press release stating that on Friday it will start the third stage of its nationwide anti-levy campaign, with sit-ins planned in every district. The movement, led by emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, continues to press for the complete repeal of one outlet petroleum levy of Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. Earlier, the federal government and JI formed committees to explore relief measures, but the party maintains that only full abolition will satisfy its demands.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and PM Shehbaz Sharif’s political adviser Rana Sanaullah have reportedly contacted JI vice emir Liaqat Baloch to arrange a meeting, yet no further dialogue has occurred. Rehman has warned that if the government persists in postponing action, the protests will intensify on the streets. The party’s campaign will remain active nationwide until its demand is met.

Why it matters

The protests could pressure the government to change fuel taxes that affect everyday commuters across Pakistan.
