James Carville urges democratic socialists to drop the Democrat label
Democratic strategist James Carville told a media event that socialist groups should stop using the word “Democrat” if they oppose the party.
During a video news conference for the Promise To America initiative, James Carville warned democratic socialists to cease using the term “Democrat” if they are hostile to the party. He said the movement’s vocal members, who are not even Democrats, are drowning out moderate voices. The Promise To America, crafted by Representatives Tom Suozzi and Adam Gray, promotes capitalism, safety, fiscal responsibility and patriotism.
Carville claimed that about 80% of Democrats align with these values, yet only ten House Democrats have signed the pledge so far. Republicans are using the low sign-up rate to argue that the far-left is dominating the party. Suozzi and Gray defended the effort, saying leadership is supportive and the focus should extend beyond Washington to state and local officials.
Why it matters
The remarks highlight growing tension between centrist and socialist factions within the Democratic Party.
