James Carville warns of a 2028 Democratic primary showdown over socialism

James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist, told listeners that the party will undergo an ideological reckoning during the 2028 presidential primary, but he does not expect voters to choose a Democratic Socialist nominee. Citing a wave of victories by Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates in states such as New York and Colorado, Carville argued that the party historically avoids nominating its most liberal figures.

He pointed to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recently rejoined the DSA after a seven-year hiatus, as a talented figure who may run, yet warned she would likely falter in the early primaries. Carville also mentioned New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as an example of DSA-affiliated officeholders. While acknowledging the group’s growing presence, he concluded that the DSA will remain a small part of the Democratic coalition and will not secure the presidential nomination in 2028.
