James Webb Telescope Reveals Detailed View of Lion's Head Nebula
The James Webb Space Telescope has released a new composite image of the Lion’s Head Nebula, captured with its NIRCam and MIRI instruments.
A fresh composite image of the Lion’s Head Nebula (NGC 2392) has been released by the James Webb Space Telescope, employing both the NIRCam and MIRI cameras. The nebula is the leftover shell of a star similar in size to our Sun, which exhausted its core fusion and expelled gas and dust into space. At the center, a white dwarf continues to emit intense radiation that energizes the surrounding gas, creating the bright, irregular “face” of the nebula.
Surviving dust clumps and a cloud of ionized gas form the mane that surrounds the central region. Researchers anticipate that this more detailed snapshot will improve understanding of the dynamics between stellar remnants, dust particles, and high-energy radiation. The release is part of JWST’s ongoing series of spectacular astronomical observations.
Why it matters
The image offers scientists a clearer look at how dying Sun-like stars shape surrounding material, informing models of stellar evolution.
