Jamia Millia Islamia protest escalates as hunger strike continues and security tightens
Students at Jamia Millia Islamia are still protesting for the restoration of their union, with four hunger strikers and heavy security surrounding the Delhi campus.
Since Oct 12, students at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi have been staging a protest demanding the reinstatement of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union and the ouster of the chief proctor. Roughly 200 demonstrators remain on campus as police and security personnel seal off Gate No. 7 and nearby entrances, preventing the entry of food and water. Four protesters have launched a hunger strike to intensify pressure on the administration.
Authorities have repeatedly used loudspeakers to urge the crowd to vacate the premises and have moved all teaching to online platforms, shutting the library, canteens and main gates. Student Mohammad Ayan Khan alleges the online-class decision is a tactic to force students off campus before exams. The standoff continues amid accusations that the university is targeting participants in the agitation.
