Jammu traffic police launch two-wheeler crackdown after 88 deaths in seven months

Data from the first seven months of 2026 recorded 699 road accidents across Kathua, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch, resulting in 88 deaths and 1,001 injuries, with two-wheelers linked to 44% of the incidents. The traffic police of Rural Jammu responded with a special drive from September 1 to 14, issuing 8,675 challans, including 5,767 for riding without helmets and 1,152 for pillion riders without helmets. Additional penalties covered triple riding, mobile-phone use, dangerous driving and unlicensed operation, while three minors had their vehicles seized.

Overall, 187 two-wheelers were confiscated. The campaign combined enforcement with 267 educational programmes at schools, bus stands and libraries, and introduced a “no-challan, only counselling” outreach in Rajouri and Poonch, where riders received safety advice without fines. Senior Superintendent Farooq Qaiser indicated similar operations targeting other vehicle categories will follow.
