Japan and Australia Successfully Test Joint High-Energy Laser System
Australia and Japan have completed a field test of a collaborative high-energy laser prototype, marking their first joint defence-industry project.
Australia and Japan have achieved a successful test of a high-energy laser system developed under the joint “Project Boobook” programme. The project was carried out by Australia’s Defense Science and Technology Group, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and was announced by the Australian Ministry of Defence. Defence Minister Richard Marles indicated the laser may eventually be installed on land-combat and littoral vessels, emphasizing its potential for optical detection and tracking of threats.
The initiative is notable for being the first defence-industry co-development between the two nations and for proceeding without U.S. participation. Officials view the cooperation as a way to share the burden of deterring China’s growing capabilities in the region. While technical details such as power output remain undisclosed, the test demonstrates progress toward integrating advanced directed-energy tools into allied defence architectures.
