Japan and India deepen economic, defence and energy cooperation after Takaichi's Delhi summit

Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae's first visit to India resulted in expanded defence ties, new investment pledges and joint projects in energy, minerals and technology.

The sixteenth Japan-India Annual Summit in Delhi saw Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Prime Minister Narendra Modi commit to stronger maritime security, including joint training for their navies and technology transfer of the UNICORN shipborne antenna. The joint statement identified semiconductors, rare-earth minerals, ICT, clean energy and pharmaceuticals as priority cooperation areas, reflecting concerns over global supply-chain stability.

Japanese investment in India was highlighted by a ¥2 trillion commitment for the year, with firms such as Suzuki, Uniqlo, Nippon Steel and Air Water signing new projects ranging from renewable ammonia to waste-to-energy plants. Cultural and academic exchanges were also expanded, and the Quad was cited as a platform for the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” vision. Ongoing infrastructure support includes yen-financed metro extensions and the upcoming high-speed rail link between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Both governments expect the partnership to grow beyond commerce into deeper strategic alignment.

Why it matters

The expanded Japan-India partnership strengthens regional security and diversifies supply chains for critical technologies and energy.
