Japan and Qatar pledge joint push for quicker Middle East de-escalation
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Qatar’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani agreed to deepen cooperation aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Qatar’s foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in Tokyo, where they committed to close coordination to accelerate a de-escalation of the Middle East situation. Takaichi praised Qatar’s diplomatic outreach while highlighting persistent military tensions involving Iran and disruptions to the rule-of-law-based maritime order. Al-Thani briefed the Japanese side on ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations and asked Japan to play a proactive role in Gulf stability and development.
The dialogue also covered broadening economic cooperation beyond traditional energy sectors, with a particular focus on artificial-intelligence collaboration. Japan is drafting a comprehensive package to bolster the Gulf’s economic and energy resilience, and Al-Thani, attending the Asian Games closing ceremony, expressed optimism about Japan’s support for the upcoming 2030 Doha Asian Games.
