Japan deploys Chinook helicopter to bolster Indonesia's fight against West Kalimantan fires

Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have dispatched a CH-47 Chinook water-bombing helicopter to assist Indonesia in combating extensive forest and land fires in West Kalimantan, especially in the Ketapang district, which has suffered prolonged dry conditions. Deputy III for Emergency Response at the National Board for Disaster Management, Budi Irawan, expressed gratitude for Japan’s near-two-week support and highlighted the helicopter’s role in reaching remote hotspots.

Japanese personnel said they were proud to work alongside the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police (Polri) on this humanitarian mission. The BNPB, together with TNI, Polri, the Regional Disaster Management Agency, Manggala Agni fire brigade and Fire Care Communities, has also strengthened an integrated ground task force. Prior to deployment, Irawan’s delegation met with Supadio Air Force Base commander Air Vice Marshal Sidik Setiyono and Japanese officials, then inspected the situation on site via Rasau Jaya Pier in Kubu Raya District.
