Japan fills Chongqing consul post after eight-month diplomatic hiatus
Japan has appointed Shigehiro Nishiumi as acting consul general in Chongqing, ending an eight-month vacancy that followed a Taiwan-related dispute.
The Japanese government named former Hong Kong deputy consul Shigehiro Nishiumi to lead its Chongqing mission on Aug. 4, closing a gap that began when the previous consul, Mari Takada, moved to Shenyang in December. The vacancy arose amid heightened tensions after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks on Taiwan last November, which Beijing viewed as provocative. Beijing has since increased diplomatic pressure on Tokyo.
