Japan reaffirms support for ICC despite U.S. sanctions

Japan said it will continue backing the International Criminal Court, voicing strong concerns over recent U.S. sanctions on the court.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minori Kihara told a television program that Japan remains committed to the rule of law and the ICC, describing the U.S. measures as contrary to Japan’s stance. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi echoed this sentiment shortly after the United States announced the sanctions. While Japan expressed its worries, it stopped short of directly condemning the United States or demanding a reversal of the policy.

Why it matters

The remarks highlight a diplomatic rift between Japan and the U.S. over support for international justice mechanisms.
