Japan records its 31st typhoon of the year, tying ninth-highest historic count

Japan's weather agency confirmed the formation of the 31st typhoon of the year, matching the ninth-largest seasonal total since records began in 1951.

Early Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed the emergence of Typhoon In-fa near the Marshall Islands, tracking slowly toward the southeast. The agency also noted that Typhoon Champi, the season's 30th system, was situated west-northwest of Yonaguni Island, prompting alerts for strong gusts and large waves in Okinawa Prefecture. Champi exhibited a central pressure of 955 hectopascals and sustained winds up to 216 kilometers per hour.

Forecasts indicate the storm will move northward across the East China Sea, shift eastward on Sunday, and by Monday approach western Japan before weakening as it passes south of Shikoku. This marks the 31st typhoon of the year, tying the ninth-highest seasonal total recorded since 1951.

Why it matters

The high number of typhoons highlights ongoing climate challenges and poses risks to coastal communities in Japan and surrounding regions.
