Japan's acting envoy holds first public talks with Myanmar's foreign minister
Japan's charge d'affaires ad interim Shogo Yoshitake met Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe, marking the first known encounter between the two sides.
In Yangon, Shogo Yoshitake, Japan's acting ambassador, sat down with Myanmar's foreign minister Tin Maung Swe, according to the country's foreign ministry. The officials discussed ways to expand cooperation despite Japan not recognizing the military-led government of President Min Aung Hlaing. Japan has left its ambassadorial post vacant since Ichiro Maruyama's departure in September 2024 and continues to call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains under house arrest.
Why it matters
