Japan's Air Self-Defense Force retrieves fragment of downed Global Hawk drone

The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force has recovered a 1.5 m × 1.4 m piece of a Global Hawk UAV that crashed off Tottori and drifted ashore.

A section of the missing Global Hawk unmanned aircraft was found on the western coast of Tottori, measuring roughly 1.5 meters by 1.4 meters. The ASDF lost contact with the drone while it was operating near Tottori on Tuesday, and a connection failure was reported shortly before it vanished from radar. The search for the remainder of the aircraft continues. The drone, one of three operated from Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture, lacks a flight recorder and is remotely piloted from the base.

Why it matters
