Japan's Defense Ministry is evaluating U.S.-origin artificial intelligence to speed up command and control decisions for its Self-Defense Forces.
Japan's Defense Ministry is exploring the incorporation of American-origin artificial intelligence into the Self-Defense Forces' command and control architecture to hasten battlefield analysis, target assessment and order transmission. One candidate is Palantir Technologies Inc.’s Maven Smart System, a platform that aggregates classified satellite and reconnaissance data and has been employed by the U.S. military in operations against Iran.
To avoid over-dependence on a single foreign supplier, the ministry also plans to pair U.S. tools with Japanese-made AI, highlighting Sakana AI K.K.’s Sakana Fugu as a potential central hub that can delegate tasks to multiple AI systems as needed. Officials stress that AI cannot handle unprecedented scenarios and that human oversight must be preserved to prevent erroneous strikes and accountability gaps. The initiative is driven by fears that lagging in AI capability could impair decision-making speed, accuracy and interoperability with the United States. Experts warn that international norms on military AI remain underdeveloped, calling for careful deliberation before any rollout.
