Japan sees 9.6% drop in August foreign visitors amid China slowdown

In August, Japan recorded 3.10 million foreign visitors, a 9.6% decrease compared with the same month last year, according to government data. The decline is largely attributed to a steep fall in arrivals from China and weaker travel demand from several Southeast Asian countries. Additional factors include rising fuel surcharges tied to the United States' war with Iran and flight disruptions caused by typhoons.
South Korea led inbound tourism with 850,500 visitors, up 28.7%, followed by Taiwan with 666,000 arrivals, up 7.3%. Visitor numbers from Hong Kong, the United States and Italy also rose, while arrivals from Australia and Thailand slipped.
