Japan sees record July tourism with 3.44 million foreign visitors
Japan welcomed 3.44 million overseas travelers in July, a new monthly high, as demand stayed strong during the northern-hemisphere summer break.
Government estimates show July’s inbound tourism rose marginally by 0.1 percent from a year earlier, reaching 3.44 million visitors, the highest for the month on record. South Korea led the source markets with 894,700 arrivals, up 31.9 percent, followed by Taiwan with 763,800 visitors, a 26.4 percent increase and also a record. Conversely, arrivals from China fell sharply, dropping 56.1 percent to 428,200 amid lingering diplomatic tensions.
Why it matters
Tourism revenue is a key driver of Japan's economy, and shifts in visitor origins signal broader regional dynamics.
