Japanese BitTorrent users face hefty settlement demands after copyright holders trace IP addresses

A Tokyo resident who downloaded adult videos via BitTorrent received a court order revealing his personal details and a 500,000-yen demand from a video producer.

A self-employed man in his 40s from Tokyo began using BitTorrent to obtain adult videos without paying, turning the software off each morning after downloading. In May he received a court-issued notice authorizing the release of his personal information, and later a lawyer’s letter demanding 500,000 yen, threatening civil or criminal proceedings. Statistics from the Tokyo District Court show disclosure requests climbing from 814 in 2023 to 5,320 in 2025, with a communications ministry survey indicating that most ISP requests concern adult-video infringement.

Video production companies now employ IP-identification tools to trace users and file court orders before seeking settlements. The man hired a lawyer, who advised against immediate payment and began negotiations to reduce the sum, easing the anxiety the case caused him. Lawyers for rights holders warn that ignoring such demands can lead to criminal complaints, while others note the high sums sought often exceed the alleged wrongdoing.
