Japanese hotels launch sleep-focused packages to attract health-conscious travelers

Several hotels in Japan are introducing sleep-enhancement programs, offering custom teas, high-tech bedding and medical advice to improve guests' rest.

Tokyo's Hotel 1899 has rolled out a "Totono-ne" sleep retreat that begins with a questionnaire, followed by a custom tea blend such as chamomile mixed with Mimasaka bancha, and rooms equipped with high-performance pillows and bath salts. Yuiko Ogawa says the program leverages the large portion of a guest's stay spent sleeping. According to Kanae Usui of JTB Tourism Research & Consulting, the rise in sleep-related offerings reflects widespread sleep dissatisfaction and a shift toward health-oriented travel.

Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, a luxury property in Bunkyo Ward, uses a device to track guests' brain waves and provides doctor-guided advice based on deep-sleep data. Ayumi Yoshida notes the hotel's clinic gives it a unique advantage. In Kanagawa Prefecture, Malibu Hotel at Riviera Zushi Marina launched a "Sleep Well Stay" plan that custom-fits mattresses after assessing each guest's sleep posture, emphasizing the calming effect of the seaside environment, as described by staff member Aki Uchimura.
