Jayden Daniels issues cease-and-desist to LSU over No. 5 jersey assignment
Jayden Daniels' representative sent LSU a cease-and-desist demanding the school stop using his name, image and likeness after the Tigers assigned his former No. 5 jersey to D.J. Pickett.
Representatives for Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels have formally requested that LSU stop using his name, image and likeness, citing a cease-and-desist letter sent to one outlet director Verge Ausberry. The action stems from LSU's plan to allow cornerback D.J. Pickett to don the No. 5 jersey, the same number Daniels wore while winning the 2023 Heisman Trophy.
Daniels' spokesperson said the former Heisman winner feels the reassignment disrespects his legacy at the university. Although the jersey has never been retired, this would be its first use since Daniels' departure. Pickett, a former five-star recruit who recorded three interceptions as a freshman, previously wore No. 3.
Coach Lane Kiffin reminded that Pickett was promised the number when he signed with LSU in December 2024, a commitment made under former coach Brian Kelly. Kiffin indicated the decision is not solely his and should honor prior assurances.
