JCPenney launches 'Retail Rejuvenation' trade-in campaign to win back bargain shoppers
JCPenney introduced a short-term trade-in promotion that lets customers exchange regrettable off-price buys for a $15 discount on purchases of $50 or more, while donating the returned items through Good360.
JCPenney rolled out a quirky "Retail Rejuvenation" campaign that includes a tongue-in-cheek video portraying six real shoppers undergoing a mock therapy session to shed their off-price buying habits. Central to the effort is a three-day Retail Regrets Trade-In program, running Aug. 28-30, where customers can surrender any off-price item they regret and earn $15 off a $50 purchase; the surrendered goods will be sent to Good360 for charitable redistribution.
Brand CEO Michelle Wlazlo emphasized that the retailer aims to capture share from the growing off-price segment while highlighting its extensive brand mix, from Liz Claiborne and Aeropostale to Nike and a wide beauty portfolio. She noted recent traffic gains of 6% year-over-year, though the most recent fiscal year still saw net sales dip more than 5% to about $6 billion, with Q4 sales down 8%. The company is also testing a smaller-footprint store near Chicago and has launched a cross-brand loyalty program with Aéropostale to deepen customer connections across its Catalyst Brands portfolio.
Why it matters
The initiative shows how a struggling retailer is using creative promotions to attract price-sensitive shoppers and boost sales.
