Jeff Dean seeks $50 billion valuation for AI startup Discovery Loop

Former Google chief scientist Jeff Dean is reportedly raising a new round for his AI venture Discovery Loop, targeting a valuation near $50 billion.

Jeff Dean, the former chief scientist of Google, is reportedly seeking a new financing round for his startup Discovery Loop, aiming for a valuation around $50 billion after a recent $1 billion raise at roughly $10 billion. The firm describes its mission as automating discovery to accelerate science and engineering by running thousands of experiments in parallel. Its initial backers include Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, Doerr Capital and a founding investment from Alphabet, as noted by Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Dean’s co-founders—Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals—have each contributed to major Google products such as Search, Ads, Gemini and Gmail. A pitch deck posted on X showcased their academic credentials and past achievements, prompting venture investor Vinod Khosla to liken the effort to his early investment in OpenAI. The fundraising reflects investors’ belief that a small number of top AI teams could become the next wave of frontier AI companies, despite the lack of a commercial product to date.

Why it matters

The fundraising underscores intense investor appetite for elite AI teams and could shape future scientific research tools.
