Jennifer Esposito reveals psychiatric ward stay before celiac diagnosis

Actress Jennifer Esposito disclosed that a severe, undiagnosed illness led to depression, a brief psychiatric hospitalization, and ultimately a celiac disease diagnosis.

Jennifer Esposito opened up on Maria Menounos' "Heal Squad" podcast about a multi-year health crisis that derailed her early acting work in New York City. She recounted being hospitalized, placed on numerous medications, and even facing shock-treatment proposals while doctors could not pinpoint the problem, leaving her deeply depressed and suicidal. After a frightening windshield-shattering incident, a physician finally diagnosed her with severe celiac disease, noting liver failure and extreme nutrient deficiencies.

The condition caused hair and nail loss, a tooth falling out during filming, and overwhelming sensitivity to light. Following a gluten-free regimen and intensive medical monitoring, Esposito says she has recovered enough to leave the United States, no longer experiences panic attacks, and now advocates for gut health. She credits the diagnosis with saving her life and reshaping her outlook.
