Jens Stoltenberg declines chairmanship of Munich Security Conference, stays finance minister

Jens Stoltenberg said he will not take the top post at the Munich Security Conference, preferring to remain Norway's finance minister.

At a board meeting in Berlin, Jens Stoltenberg confirmed he will not become the chief of the Munich Security Conference. He stepped down as NATO secretary-general in 2024 and was offered the prestigious role, but chose to keep his position as Norway's finance minister. He will still serve as co-chair of the conference board alongside German diplomat Helga Schmid.

Why it matters

Stoltenberg's choice signals Norway's emphasis on domestic finance over a high-profile international security role.
