Jeremy Allen White urges third-party regulation for social-media giants
Actor Jeremy Allen White called for stronger third-party oversight of social-media companies, citing the risks highlighted in his new film The Social Reckoning.
At a gala showing of The Social Reckoning in London, Jeremy Allen White urged the creation of third-party regulators for major tech firms, comparing them to oversight bodies in air travel and drug safety. The thriller, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, dramatizes the 2021 Wall Journal expose on Facebook’s internal practices and the role of whistle-blower Frances Haugen. White told the Press Association that without such safeguards, social media’s influence is "scary" and can fuel misinformation and hate.
He added that he hopes young people will develop a healthier distance from these platforms, recalling a time before their ubiquity. Co-star Mikey Madison and Sorkin also attended the Curzon Mayfair event, where the film is set for a UK release on October 9.
