Jerry Jones signals willingness to trade with $33.6 million cap space available
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team has ample salary-cap room and could pursue a trade, especially on defense, after recent restructurings.
Recent contract restructurings for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson cleared more than $19 million from the Dallas Cowboys’ payroll. This leaves the franchise with $33.6 million in cap space, eligible to carry over to 2027, according to the NFL Players Association. On a local radio program, owner Jerry Jones said the financial flexibility makes a trade “conspicuously obvious,” especially to shore up a defense that allowed a league-high 30.1 points per game last year.
While no trade is currently in progress, Jones confirmed the team is actively exploring options, focusing on defensive talent. He also highlighted recent offensive improvements, including the acquisition of lineman Broderick James from the Steelers, and expressed confidence the team will strengthen both sides of the ball.
Why it matters
The Cowboys' potential trade could reshape their roster and impact the NFL's competitive balance.
