JetZero unveils $3 billion blended-wing-body jet, Japan Airlines joins development
JetZero revealed its Z4 blended-wing-body aircraft, promising 250 seats, a 5,750-mile range and 30-50% lower fuel use, with Japan Airlines now supplying operational expertise.
JetZero, a California-based aerospace venture, showcased its Z4 blended-wing-body jet at the Farnborough International Airshow, describing a 250-passenger aircraft capable of flying roughly 5,750 miles while using 30-50% less fuel than current models. The design merges the fuselage with the wings, reducing aerodynamic drag and allowing more of the structure to generate lift. A full-scale prototype, built by Scaled Composites, is expected to take to the skies in 2027, with commercial entry projected for the early 2030s. The company has a $3 billion agreement with the U.S. government to construct a production facility in North Carolina, and major U.S. carriers including United, Delta and Alaska have pledged support.
Japan Airlines has joined the program to offer operational, cabin-service and maintenance input, and the aircraft will feature screen-based external views instead of side windows. Historical blended-wing experiments by Boeing, NASA, the Air Force and Airbus inform the effort, but the Z4 aims to be the first full-scale passenger jet of this configuration.
Why it matters
The aircraft could dramatically lower airline fuel costs and emissions if its blended-wing design delivers the promised efficiency.
