Jewish groups push Ottawa to designate Iran-linked militia after Toronto attacks
Jewish organisations are urging the Canadian government to add the Iraq-based Kata’ib Hezbollah to the terrorist list following alleged links to recent Toronto shootings.
On the International Day of Remembrance of Terrorism victims, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs together with the Canadian Families of Victims of October 7 began a drive to have Kata’ib Hezbollah, Palestine Action Canada and Masar Badil placed on Canada’s terrorist list. The request follows U.S. prosecutors’ claim that a Kata’ib Hezbollah member told an undercover officer the militia was behind recent shootings at a Toronto synagogue and the U.S. consulate.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre wrote to public-safety minister Gary Anandasangaree on Aug. 2 urging an immediate listing, noting the group is not yet designated. Listing would freeze assets, criminalise support and restrict travel. Campaign leaders, including Jacqui Rivers Vital and CIJA chief Noah Shack, warned that foreign-linked extremist groups are increasingly operating in Canada and called for stronger legal tools and more resources for police and intelligence agencies.
Why it matters
Designating the militia would allow Canada to block its financing and curb foreign-linked extremist activity.
