Jewish New Yorkers make up over half of NYC hate crimes in first three quarters of 2026

Jewish residents were the target of 53% of confirmed hate crimes in New York City from January through September 2026, far exceeding their roughly 10% share of the population, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Official statistics released Tuesday indicate that 245 of 463 confirmed hate crimes in New York City between January and September 2026 targeted Jewish New Yorkers, representing 53% of all incidents despite Jews comprising roughly 10% of the city’s population. This marks a 1.2% increase over the same period in 2025. In the third quarter alone, Jews were victims in 59 of 125 confirmed cases, while Muslim-targeted hate crimes rose to 32 city-wide, a 78% increase from the prior year.

The NYPD, which began publishing only "confirmed" hate crimes in February 2026, noted an overall 15.8% rise in hate crimes for the first eight months of the year. Anti-Jewish confirmed incidents were up 8% in that span, and the department said it is deploying extra officers to protect Jewish institutions, especially during the High Holy Days. Commissioner Jessica Tisch reiterated the NYPD’s commitment to partner with Jewish communities and continue aggressive investigations through its Hate Crime Task Force.
