Jill Wagner details month-long boot camp prepping Lioness cast for realistic action

Jill Wagner explained on a podcast that the Lioness cast undergoes a month of intensive training with former special-operations personnel to ensure authentic weapon handling and combat choreography.

During an appearance on a podcast, Jill Wagner described the rigorous preparation the Lioness ensemble undergoes before shooting. Actors participate in a month-long boot camp overseen by veterans from elite units such as SEALs, Green Berets and Delta Force, who teach proper weapons handling and tactical movement. On set, at least one technical advisor—often two—reviews every choreographed sequence to prevent errors and maintain realism.

Wagner stressed that these skills are perishable, requiring constant practice to avoid bad habits. She also highlighted that series creator Taylor Sheridan insists on having advisors present throughout production. The extensive training contributes to the show’s reputation for delivering some of television’s most convincing action sequences.

Why it matters

The training ensures the series portrays military action credibly, enhancing viewer immersion and setting a higher standard for TV combat realism.
