Jimmy Gomez faces tight race against fellow Democrat Angela Gonzales-Torres in California
A new poll shows Rep. Jimmy Gomez trailing Angela Gonzales-Torres by a narrow margin as the two Democrats head to the general election.
According to a recent poll conducted by Upswing Research and Strategy for Guardrails Alliance, Rep. Jimmy Gomez is statistically tied with fellow Democrat Angela Gonzales-Torres, with Gomez at 38% and Gonzales-Torres at 41%—a difference that falls inside the 4.9% margin of error. Both candidates secured spots in the general election through California’s top-two primary format. The survey suggests that knowledge of Gomez’s association with the pro-AI super PAC network Leading the Future could depress his support, with 63% of respondents favoring Gonzales-Torres when told of that link.
Guardrails Alliance is monitoring the contest closely, while progressive organizations like Justice Democrats have identified Gomez as a potential target. Gomez’s previous narrow victories and a recent ethics investigation into alleged sexual misconduct add further uncertainty to his re-election prospects.
Why it matters
The race could determine the balance of progressive and AI-influenced interests in a key California congressional seat.
