Job Seekers Turn to ChatGPT to Interview AI Recruiters, Resulting in Bot-to-Bot Calls

A job hunter named Christopher used ChatGPT to converse with Everforth Apex Systems' AI recruiter Riley, but the interaction produced no human follow-up.

Christopher, a government contractor facing a dry job market, submitted roughly 700 applications and received only five AI-mediated interview requests from Riley, Everforth Apex Systems' virtual recruiter. Each interview concluded with Riley assuring a human recruiter would reach out if his qualifications matched, yet no follow-up occurred. To test the system, Christopher entered his résumé details into ChatGPT Voice and let the AI respond to Riley, resulting in a ten-minute bot-to-bot conversation that still ended with an unfulfilled promise.

He later created a fictitious candidate, Don Dickner, and let ChatGPT fully play the role, extending the call to 23 minutes, but again received no further contact. Industry voices such as Ophir Samson of Greenhouse highlight the engineering challenges of voice AI, while Mark Monaghan of IQor suggests that if employers use bots, candidates may reciprocate. Recruitment startups like Ribbon are already building tools to detect AI-assisted answers, indicating a growing awareness of the issue.
