John Oliver warns that Nazi-flavored rhetoric is gaining traction in GOP before midterms

John Oliver used his show to highlight a surge of Nazi-related symbols and statements among Republican candidates and leaders ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Returning after a two-one outlet break, John Oliver devoted an entire episode to what he described as a growing comfort with Nazi-adjacent behavior within the Republican Party as the November 3 midterms approach. He referenced Peter Oberacker’s Veterans Day post showing his grandfather in a Wehrmacht uniform, Brandon Herrera’s 2022 video calling the MP-40 “Hitler’s street sweeper,” and a leaked group-chat where Paul Ingrassia admitted to a “Nazi streak.”

Oliver also pointed to Elon Musk’s alleged salute at a 2025 rally, Karl Rove’s warning about bigots like Bo French, and the increasing mainstreaming of extremist figures such as Nick Fuentes, who has appeared on Tucker Carlson’s podcast and received support from GOP lawmakers. The host linked the trend to heightened antisemitic narratives emerging from the Gaza conflict and cited a Manhattan Institute analysis showing 37% of Republicans, including 54% of men under 50, doubt the historical reality of the Holocaust. He concluded that these far-right elements are no longer fringe jokes but ballot-line candidates in a crucial election.
