John Schneider Confesses He Pretended to Be a Southern Farm Boy to Land Bo Duke Role
Actor John Schneider revealed he lied about his age and background to secure the part of Bo Duke on "The Dukes of Hazzard" when he was 18.
John Schneider recounted how, at 18, he convinced the casting team for "The Dukes of Hazzard" that he was a 24-year-old from a fictional Georgia town called Snailville, claiming a nonexistent racing school background. He noted that the show’s creators wanted a "good old boy" from the rural South with no acting experience but plenty of driving skill, a description that did not fit his New York upbringing. While one producer opposed his hiring, another with more authority championed him, resulting in his casting as Bo Duke in 1978.
Schneider discussed his mindset, saying he viewed the deception as preparation meeting opportunity rather than sheer desperation. He also recalled trying to get onto the set of "Smokey and the Bandit" in Atlanta, employing similar tactics. The series premiered in 1979, ran for seven seasons, and made Schneider synonymous with the character, later leading to roles such as in "Smallville."
