Johor extends school closures for five more days amid hazardous haze

Johor schools will stay closed for an additional five days starting Monday because air quality remains unsafe, officials said.

Johor’s education authorities have ordered schools to stay closed for five more days beginning Monday, citing ongoing hazardous haze conditions and API levels that remain in the unhealthy range. The move was confirmed after a Saturday meeting of the Johor Haze Management Coordination Committee and follows earlier two-day closures that began on Oct 8. Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail’s directive and the state’s commitment to public health guided the extension.

Students will continue with Teaching and Learning at Home as outlined in the Ministry of Education’s PdPR Manual Version 2.0, while exam candidates may receive limited allowances subject to strict SOPs. The education department will review SOPs daily and coordinate with the national examination board. Health officials warned of rising asthma and respiratory cases, urging masks and preventive measures for vulnerable groups.

Why it matters

Prolonged haze poses health risks, disrupting education and requiring remote learning for thousands of students.
