Jon Watts tapped to helm new Lucasfilm Skywalker Saga installment
Lucasfilm has attached Jon Watts, the former Spider-Man director, to direct the first film of a planned Skywalker Saga trilogy.
Lucasfilm confirmed that Jon Watts, who directed the recent Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland, is set to direct the first entry of a new Skywalker Saga trilogy written by Simon Kinberg. The saga, which would extend the franchise beyond Episodes I-IX, is intended to become Episode X and may feature Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker in some capacity. Watts previously co-created the 2024 Star Wars series Skeleton Crew and brings experience handling large-scale productions.
The trilogy is still in the development phase and awaits greenlight from Disney, making it the most advanced project after the Starfighter movie, which is being helmed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling for a May 27, 2027 theatrical debut. Lucasfilm declined to comment further on the status of the new saga.
