Jordan Spieth fires 5-under 65 with Tommy Fleetwood in FedEx St. Jude playoff opener
Jordan Spieth posted a 5-under 65 alongside Tommy Fleetwood in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
At TPC Southwind in Memphis, Jordan Spieth recorded a 5-under 65 in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, sharing the lead with Tommy Fleetwood. Spieth found the fairway nine times out of 14 and placed tenth in strokes gained off the tee, while his approach statistics were among the best of the field. He characterized the round as "stress free," noting that all missed greens were on the fringe and he still had a putter on each.
The result moves Spieth closer to the top-50 FedExCup threshold he needs to advance to the BMW Championship. Fleetwood, who finished tied for third last year, also posted a solid start. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy struggled on the final three holes, finishing four over par.
Why it matters
Spieth's low round boosts his FedExCup standing and keeps his playoff hopes alive.
