Journalist recounts ten-day rescue effort for missing Irish teen ending in tragedy

Raja Noraina Raja Rahim remembers the ten-day search for 15-year-old Irish teenager Nora Anne Quoirin in Malaysia, which concluded with the girl's death.

On 4 August 2019, 15-year-old Irish teen Nora Anne Quoirin vanished while on a two-week holiday with her family at a resort in Pantai, Negri Sembilan. Raja Noraina Raja Rahim, a Harian one outlet reporter, described how police quickly launched a multi-agency SAR operation involving the Air Unit, K9 Unit, General Operations Force, Civil Defence Force, VAT 69 commandos, Senoi Praaq unit, local villagers and drones. Journalists set up at the police station’s press centre and returned each morning to monitor the search, while the parents initially declined media contact.

Over the week, traditional healers claiming to know the girl's whereabouts also participated. Despite continued efforts, the search ended on the tenth day when a volunteer team found her body in a ravine near a stream, after which a post-mortem was performed and the remains were handed to the family.
